BGC Environmental Brokerage Services

Corporate Overview - History

BGC Environmental Brokerage Services was first established in 1992 under the name Cantor Environmental Brokerage, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald.

It was founded by Carlton Bartels, a visionary in environmental issues in the U.S., to implement the ground-breaking emissions trading markets introduced under the Clean Air Act.  Cantor Environmental Brokerage brought liquidity to these fledgling markets – the world’s first environmental markets – and established a long list of ‘firsts’ in emissions trading. CO2e.com was formed in 2000  to address the prospect of global greenhouse gas emissions trading created by the signature of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997.  CO2e.com rapidly formed a strong reputation world-wide as a leader in greenhouse gas emissions trading, and in 2002 joined with Mitsui & Co. to expand its services in Asia.  CO2e.com has been first to market with most of the trading structures in use around the world, pushing the development of the market through innovative products and through giving time and expertise to the development of the necessary legislative frameworks.

Sadly, most of our New York team -- including Carlton -- was killed in September 2001, while sitting at their desks in the World Trade Center.  Tribute pages can be found here

Most recently -- in August 2011 -- we became BGC Environmental Brokerage Services, L.P., following the acquisition of CantorCO2e, L.P. by BGC Partners, Inc. (Nasdaq: BGCP).
